Bummed that the 2013 Winter Classic was axed? Well, the National Hockey League might be trying to make up for that lost outdoor game fourfold.
According to The Fourth Period, which cites information from "multiple well-placed sources," the NHL is planning on holding multiple outdoor games in 2014 in effort to recoup some of the lost revenue generated from cancelled showcase events such as the 2013 Classic and All-Star weekend. (Due to the Sochi Games, the 2013-14 season is also expected to be played without an All-Star Game.)
In addition to the 2014 Winter Classic, a makeup date between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Ann Arbour's Michigan Stadium, the site says the league is trying to schedule an open-air contest at New York's Yankee Stadium and possibly one at Los Angeles' Dodgers Stadium as well.
L.A. Dodgers president Stan Kasten told the L.A. Times last May that the ball club's new ownership group (which includes Los Angeles Kings fan Magic Johnson) was going to investigate whether Dodger Stadium could host a Winter Classic featuring the Kings.
"Facility-wise, we could certainly handle it," Kasten told the Times.
If executed, it wouldn't be the league's first warm-weather outdoor contest.
On Sept. 27, 1991, Wayne Gretzky's Kings defeated the New York Rangers in an outdoor exhibition game held in the parking lot of Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas, despite a daytime temperature as high as 35°C.
The Fourth Period eports that the NHL is also in discussions to bring back the Canada-based Heritage Classic, previously played in Edmonton (2003) and Calgary (2011).
The new Heritage Classic could be held in either Edmonton or Vancouver.
"There has also been talk about staging a game in each of the seven Canadian NHL markets, Minnesota, Denver and Washington," reads the report. "Philadelphia, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Boston and Chicago, all of whom have already hosted a Winter Classic, are also options for future games."
