Edmonton Oilers centre Eric Belanger makes his living winning draws, but when it comes to the Gary Bettman versus Donald Fehr faceoff, The Edmonton Journal relays he'd like to see a referee, not a linesman, between the opposing sides.
"Let's have a mediator," said Belanger, who skated with the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Tuesday, along with Oilers teammates Ryan Jones, Jeff Petry and Nick Schultz, taking his mind off the stalled NHL lockout talks.
"Sure, why not? Didn't baseball try that? (1994, with Bill Usery). Get somebody in who will at least say, 'I'm going to hear you, and we're going to split (the difference) and make some decision.' "
On whether or not fans will come back after this lockout: "The players would still be playing under the old CBA until this is resolved. I don't think it'll be a problem in Canada because it's in our DNA. In some markets in the U.S., people don't really give a crap.
"But even in Montreal, where I'm from, we might lose some fans with this. They're tired of this."
On the notion of owner bringing in replacement players: "Replacement players? These guys maybe. The Golden Bears. It would be great for them, but ..."
"Replacement players? That's just another way to try to scare us off. We're 720 players — the best players in the world. People go to the rinks to see these players play.
"Nobody's ever going to cross (the picket line, with NHLers going against the NHLPA). You see guys going to Europe to play, but that's it. I think Corey Potter was the first North American from our team to go today. He's got no kids. It's easy for him to go. He wants to be playing. We all do."
