{allcanada} WHL: GIANTS WINNING THANKS TO SPECIAL TEAMS, DOWN ROCKETS

The Vancouver Giants are relying on their special teams to get wins this season.

Vancouver reeled off three unanswered power-play goals to snuff the Kelowna Rockets 4-1 in Western Hockey League play Friday night.

The Giants went 3-for-6 on the power play, while the Rockets were 0-for-9.

That proficiency with the man advantage and effectiveness while down a skater has resulted in three-straight wins for Vancouver.

As a result, the Giants have earned sole possession of the B.C. Division's top spot.

Kelowna is the only team in the entire Canadian Hockey League to not win a game so far this season.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was Red Deer 4 Brandon 2, Swift Current 3 Calgary 0, Kamloops 4 Prince Albert 3, Lethbridge 4 Prince George 1, Tri-City 6 Regina 4, Saskatoon 6 Moose Jaw 4 and Portland 3 Spokane 2.

At Vancouver, Marek Tvrdon opened scoring for the Giants (4-3-0), before Matt MacKay, Brendan Gallagher and Randy McNaught began putting the puck away with the man advantage.

Colton Sissons was the lone scorer for Kelowna (0-4-0).

Rebels 4 Wheat Kings 2

At Brandon, Man., Lane Scheidl scored the go-ahead goal as Red Deer defeated the Wheat Kings.

Chad Robinson added the first goal of his WHL career for the Rebels (6-2-0). John Persson and Brett Ferguson, with an empty-netter, also scored.

Mark Stone and Brenden Walker replied for Brandon (4-3-0).

Broncos 3 Hitmen 0

At Calgary, Mark Friesen stopped all 25 shots he faced and Cody Eakin scored a pair of power-play goals as Swift Current prevailed over the Hitmen.

Justin Dowling scored once and set up two others for the Broncos (2-5-0).

The Broncos went 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Hitmen (2-3-0) failed to score on four chances with the man advantage. Calgary goalie Juraj Holly made 21 saves.

Blazers 4 Raiders 3

At Kamloops, B.C., the Blazers scored three power-play goals to skate to a victory over Prince Albert.

JT Barnett, Tyler Hansen, Chase Schaber and Brendan Ranford scored for Kamloops (2-3-1).

Brandon Herrod, Mike Winther and Jonathan Parker replied for the Raiders (3-4-0).

Hurricanes 4 Cougars 1

At Lethbridge, Alta., Jacob Berglund struck twice as the Hurricanes blew past Prince George.

Derek Ryckman and Austin Fyten also scored for Lethbridge (3-2-1).

Brett Connolly had a power-play goal for Prince George (2-4-0).

Americans 6 Pats 4

At Regina, Jordan Messier scored twice to lead Tri-City to a win over the Pats.

Justin Feser and Connor Rankin both had a goal and an assist for the Americans (5-2-1) , while Tyler Schmidt and Zach McPhee both had singles.

Jordan Weal tallied and had two assists for Regina (1-5-1), while Brandon Davidson, Garrett Mitchell and Carter Ashton chipped in as well.

Blades 6 Warriors 4

At Saskatoon, Darian Dziurzynski had a hat trick as the Blades carved out a win against Moose Jaw.

Curtis Hamilton scored twice and added an assist for Saskatoon (6-1-0), while Stefan Elliott added a single.

Connor Cox, Jesse Paradis, Spencer Edwards and Dylan Hood supplied the effort for Moose Jaw (2-5-0).

Winterhawks 3 Chiefs 2

At Spokane, Wash., Mac Carruth made 46 saves as Portland edged the Chiefs.

Sven Bartschi struck twice for the Winterhawks (5-1-1), while Ryan Johansen added a single.

Jared Cowen and Blake Gal replied for Spokane (2-4-0), while Mac Engel stopped 16 shots.
