Team Canada forward Sam Bennett revealed Thursday that he was dealing with an illness that led to him missing Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win over Czechia in the quarter-finals.
Bennett was back on the ice for Thursday's optional skate and said he is feeling much better now and is ready to play any role he is called upon to fill.
Canada could be in need of Bennett if captain Sidney Crosby is unable to play in Friday's semifinal against Finland. Crosby was not on the ice Thursday after exiting Wednesday's win in the second period with an apparent lower-body injury. Head coach Jon Cooper said Crosby has not been ruled of the semifinals.
"We're taking this day by day, and we're not going to put anybody in harm's way," Cooper said. "But if he can play, he's definitely going to. We'll know more again in 24 hours."
Bennett missed practice on Tuesday for what the team called maintenance before sitting out the quarter-final.
A late injury replacement for Anthony Cirelli ahead of the tournament, Bennett served largely as the 13th forward in the first three games, posting one assist.
Defenceman Josh Morrissey was also on the ice for Thursday's skate and could return Friday after missing the past three games with an undisclosed injury. Travis Sanheim has filled his spot in the lineup after sitting out Canada's opening game against Czechia last week.
