{allcanada} NWHL’s Toronto Six names Digit Murphy as franchise’s first head coach

Legendary coach Digit Murphy will soon be behind the bench once again, as she's set to serve as the first-ever head coach of the NWHL's Toronto Six when they begin their inaugural season in the new year.

The Six made the announcement on Tuesday.

Murphy has played a crucial role in the establishment and growth of the NWHL's newest franchise, having been named the team's president in April. Per the club's press release, she'll maintain that role while taking on the additional title of head coach.

"Digit has a distinguished history of inspiring and empowering her players, and we are thrilled to have her on the bench of the Toronto Six," Johanna Boynton, principal owner of the Six, said in the team's press release. "Anyone who knows Digit knows she brings a wealth of talent, dedication, and boundless energy to everything she touches. She plays to win."

Murphy brings an extensive and historic coaching resume to this new role. The longtime coach of Brown University's women's hockey program is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I history, registering winning seasons in 14 of her 18 years at the helm there. She also brings four years of experience coaching at the CWHL level, including her time getting another expansion franchise — the Kunlun Red Star, formerly of the CWHL — off the ground.

"I had a hand in selecting each of the women who make up this inaugural Six team, and I believe in this group," Murphy said, via the press release. "I look forward to leading them on the ice in our quest for an Isobel Cup, and in the community as we foster inclusion and sustainability in women's professional hockey."
