Jerome Messam will be back with the Calgary Stampeders this season.

The Stampeders announced the re-signing the veteran running back Monday night. Messam had been set to hit the open market on Tuesday.

TSN Senior Correspondent Gary Lawless reports contract holds a two-year term.

The Stampeders acquired Messam and a 2016 fifth-round draft pick from the Saskatchewan Roughriders for kicker Tyler Crapigna, a 2016 third-round selection and a negotiations list player ahead the CFL's trade deadline in 2015.

"Jerome is a very good football player who fit in very well with the Stampeders after we traded for him last year," Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel said in a team release. "I believe this is a mutually beneficial situation for both the player and the team and I'm pleased that Jerome has chosen to continue his career with the Stampeders."

Messam, of Brampton, Ont., finished third in rushing in 2015 with 1,006 yards. He added two rushing touchdowns and received for 499 yards. He was also named a West Division All-Star.

He started both of the Stampeders' playoff games, rushing for a total of 122 yards and a touchdown, while adding 126 yards receiving.

"I'm happy to get the deal done and not have to worry about free agency," said Messam in a statement. "I'm excited to be back in Calgary."

Entering his age 31 season, Messam has bounced around the CFL in his six-year career, having spent time with four other franchises.

He will be expected to help fill the role vacated by Jon Cornish, who retired after the 2015 season.
