{allcanada} OHL: DeBrincat, Strome lead way, Otters down Firebirds

 

FLINT, Mich. - Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist and Dylan Strome added four helpers as the Erie Otters downed the Flint Firebirds 5-2 on Thursday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Flint was playing its first game with assistant general manager Joe Stefan and former Plymouth Whalers star Pat Peake serving as coaches. The OHL suspended Firebirds owner Rolf Nilsen earlier Thursday, a day after the team fired its coaching staff for the second time this season.

Kyle Maksimovich, Darren Raddysh and Taylor Raddysh also scored for the Otters (43-10-1).

Ryan Moore and Connor Sills found the back of the net for the Firebirds (16-32-6), who have just two wins in their last 20 games.

Erie's Jake Lawr made 17 saves for the win as Kyle Keyser turned away 26-of-31 shots for Flint.

The Otters went 1 for 3 on the power play while the Firebirds scored once on five chances with the man advantage.

Flint head coach and general manager John Gruden and assistant coach Dave Karpa were let go on Wednesday by Nilsen, leading to his suspension.

BULLDOGS 4 ICEDOGS 2

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Trent Fox broke a 2-2 deadlock at 11:28 of the third to lift Hamilton over the IceDogs.

Matt Luff, Justin Lemcke and Matthew Strome also scored for the Bulldogs (21-28-7), who got a 28-save outing from Connor Hicks. Jesse Saban chipped in with three assists.

Anthony DiFruscia and Brendan Perlini provided the scoring for Niagara (27-21-6), which is on a three-game slide. Stephen Dhillon kicked out 25-of-29 shots in defeat.

BATTALION 9 WOLVES 1

NORTH BAY, Ont. — Mike Amadio, Mathew Santos and Zach Poirier each had two goals and an assist as the Battalion hammered Sudbury.

Steve Harland scored once and set up two more for North Bay (28-18-8), which also got goals from Brett Hargrave and David Sherman. Kyle Wood added three assists while Jake Smith made 25 saves for the victory.

Zach Wilkie was the lone scorer for the Wolves (15-36-4), who have dropped three straight. Zack Bowman allowed six goals on 22 shots before giving way to Troy Timpano, who stopped 5-of-8 shots in 31:35 of relief.

PETES 5 FRONTENACS 4

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — Logan DeNoble struck twice and Adam Timleck scored the go-ahead goal at 8:04 of the third as the Petes beat Kingston for their third win in a row.

Eric Cornel had a goal and two assists for Peterborough (27-22-6) and Hunter Garlent tacked on three helpers, while Daniel Nikandrov added the other goal. Matthew Mancina made 38 saves for the win.

Michael Dal Colle led the Frontenacs (35-15-4) with two goals and an assist while Spencer Watson had a three-point outing, including a goal. Warren Foegele rounded out the offence. Lucas Peressini stopped 31-of-36 shots in a losing cause.

GREYHOUNDS 4 SPITFIRES 1

WINDSOR, Ont. — Bobby MacIntyre had a pair of goals and Brandon Halverson stopped 36 shots as Sault Ste. Marie handed the Spitfires their fifth straight defeat.

Zachary Senyshyn and Blake Speers supplied the rest of the offence for the Greyhounds (26-21-7).

Connor Chatham kept Windsor (31-18-6) from being blanked. Michael DiPietro turned aside 21-of-24 shots in defeat.
