Season Series: The Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs split their two games in 2014-15 with each team winning at home. The Maple Leafs defeated Calgary 4-1, and the Flames defeated Toronto 6-3. Captain Dion Phaneuf had three assists for the Maple Leafs. Jiri Hudler had a goal and two assists for the Flames.
Maple Leafs team scope: Veteran forwards Tyler Bozak, Joffrey Lupul and Shawn Matthias will not play. Coach Mike Babcock said Bozak wasn't feeling well, Lupul has a "middle body" injury and Matthias was in pain from a whiplash injury. Mark Arcobello, Josh Leivo and Rich Clune were recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. The Maple Leafs have struggled offensively without James van Riemsdyk (foot) with a 3-6-2 record since his injury, and lost 6-1 at the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. "We were really rolling there when James was with us," Babcock told the Maple Leafs website. "Obviously, we're more offensively-challenged, but that doesn't mean you can't find ways to win. Play well without the puck, check real hard and compete real hard, score on your power play, stay out of the penalty box."
Flames team scope: Forward Lance Bouma left practice early on Monday and his status is uncertain. "He came in and wasn't feeling good and then we removed him from the ice," coach Bob Hartley told the Flames website. Hartley ended practice after 25 minutes to address his team about the importance of this week. The Flames have gone 4-7-1 in their past 12 games and with 31 games remaining, are nine points behind the Colorado Avalanche, the second wild card team in the Western Conference. "Looking at our situation right now in the standings this is a crucial week for us, making sure we once again understand our situation," Hartley said. "We're coming off a big win in Vancouver [on Saturday]. Let's make sure that we understand tomorrow, Toronto, it's a big game for us and at the same time we have [Pacific Division rivals] San Jose [Sharks on Thursday] and Phoenix [Coyotes on Friday]. We need to be on our toes all week." Goalie Jonas Hiller will start; he made 34 saves in a 4-1 win against the Canucks.
