Season series: Carolina Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal scored 2:51 into overtime for a 3-2 win against the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 7 at PNC Arena. Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner tied the score with 3.3 seconds left in regulation. Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the second period before Senators forward Alex Chiasson and defenseman Chris Wideman scored goals 4:22 apart later in the period.
Hurricanes team scope: Faulk was ruled out through games this weekend, which means he'll also miss the game Friday against the San Jose Sharks. Faulk sustained a lower-body injury Feb. 11 at practice. "It's taking a little longer than expected," coach Bill Peters told the Hurricanes website. "We are going to be smart about this." Goaltender Cam Ward is making the trip and expected to be available after he left a Feb. 13 game against the New York Islanders with a lower-body injury. Goaltender Daniel Altshuller, recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League to serve as Eddie Lack's backup in a 2-1 win Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets, was assigned to the ECHL on Wednesday. Forward Riley Nash has goals in consecutive games, including the game-winner against Winnipeg. Carolina is two points out of the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. "If you don't get into playoff mode now, you probably don't make the playoffs," Peters said.
Senators team scope: Forward Mika Zibanejad, who played through an illness Tuesday when Ottawa defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in a shootout, said he was feeling a little better Wednesday. "Just tried to play it simple and be on the right side of it, just try to help the team as much as I can with the effort level I had," Zibanejad told the Senators website. The Senators began their three-game homestand by snapping a three-game losing streak, and now face the Hurricanes, who are 5-0-2 against them since the start of the 2013-14 season. "They're a good team, they're playing really good right now," captain Erik Karlsson told the Senators website. "They're above us in the standings and a team we're going to have to beat. We're going to do whatever we have to do to get the two points, by making good plays or by grinding, that's one of the things we're going to have to sort out [Thursday]." Goalie Craig Anderson has a .952 save percentage over his past five starts.
