On the first day of spring training for Blue Jays pitchers and catchers, Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey revealed he underwent right knee surgery earlier this offseason.
The 41-year-old Toronto Blue Jays pitcher said he needed the procedure to repair a torn ligament in his knee which had become a nagging issue last season.
Dickey had the surgery shortly after Toronto's elimination from the playoffs and needed four to six weeks to recover.
"I had a knee issue that I tried to work through all year and ended up getting fixed at the end of the season," said Dickey to MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm in Dunedin on Sunday. "My offseason was much more about trying to get to a bit of a lighter weight, get my knee strong, things like that, to be able to endure another 200-plus inning season."
Dickey posted a 11-11 record with a 3.91 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 126 strikeouts over 214.1 innings pitched in 2015, his third season with the Jays.
The former Cy Young winner will throw a bullpen session on Monday.
