MONTREAL— A one-month-old baby was released from a Montreal hospital Monday after being struck in the head by a puck that was tossed into the stands by P.K. Subban during a public practice at the Bell Centre Sunday.
The baby, Beatrice, suffered a concussion after being struck by the puck that was thrown into the stands as a souvenir. She was given CPR on site and rushed to the Montreal Children's Hospital in stable but critical condition. She is expected to recover.
"At the end, the players took the time to throw pucks at their young fans," wrote Beatrice's mother Valerie Meloche on Facebook. "Unfortunately one of the fans who caught a puck thrown by P.K. Subban was just a month old and she caught it with her head."
The Canadiens have the first star of each home game throw three autographed pucks into the stands.
"It is very unusual that an incident occurred from this practice, as the players are very selective about who they give the pucks to," Canadiens public relations director Donald Beauchamp told Sportsnet. "But we are very sensitive to this, and we are conducting internal discussions on whether or not we will change or continue with this practice in light of Sunday's incident."
The Canadiens host the Nashville Predators on Monday night. No changes to the team's post-game puck giveaway have been mandated as of yet.
The Canadiens invited Beatrice's parents and their four children to be their guest at a game later this season. The family has accepted the offer and they will be seated in the Children's Foundation luxury suite at the Bell Centre. They will meet the players afterwards.
