Re: [SurroundSound] Ideal Space and Set-up for Multichannel Music Performance and Composition

Hi there!

My front and rear speakers are big ones.Equidistance roules in my music/living room.Often I disable central speaker and/or sw.Why? 'Cause often sounds beter this way.No cables or wires to tempt my cat... :)
Also no exposed windows or plane surfaces.
An Oppo for DVD A,BRA sand SACD,a Panny for 3D BR and flacs, another one for DVD V and/or dts-cd.

Me. In fact, my fronts & rear towers are the same, and I would have the centre the same too if the minister for war & finance would allow it...

Not equidistant, again due to the minister, so delays and an SPL meter are my friends..

That was what I thought too.  If so it is interesting to listen to what Steven Wilson said
about speaker placement...he basically puts them where they typically go in a ht
environment when he is recording and mixing. He doesn't put a lot of emphasis on it and
isn't sure if there is a right way.  This is the guy who makes the most stunning mixes in
existence.  To be safe if you can get the same speakers and put them equidistant you are
all good to go.  ITU standards are probably best but who wants a tower for a center and
two more for the rears?  If the room you are in doesn't allow it then bookshelf sized
rears seem to work as nearfield they seem psychoacoustically the same as bigger speakers
(depending on quality of course) if your delays and such are set properly.  That and an
spl meter?

It sounds like you want a recording studio as well as listening environment...?

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for the link. I am especially interested to hear from anyone that has a

Are you aware of the surround setup information on THX.COM <http://THX.COM>?

        Hi all,

A conversation starter of sorts; two very different multichannel loudspeaker
applications, which I am hoping to implement in the near future. What would your
ideal floor size and room height be for an 8-channel multi-channel surround
sound system for both music performance and composition applications?

        All the best,

        Ricky
