Nashville defenseman Shea Weber was expected to be the hottest unrestricted free agent in next summer's marketplace. But thanks to a new 14-year contract, he won't be an unrestricted free agent until 2026.
With Weber now off every team's shopping list, here is a fresh look at the top potential 2013 unrestricted free agents (based on the rules of the current collective bargaining agreement):
1. Right wing Corey Perry (Anaheim Ducks): He is 27 and boasts 87 goals over the past two seasons. He owns a Stanley Cup ring and a Hart Trophy. Plus, he is 6-3 and racks up 100 or more penalty minutes per season.
2. Defenseman Alexander Edler (Vancouver Canucks): He's 6-3, 222, and registered 49 points last season. He's productive offensively and bullish defensively. He hits (145 last season) and blocks shots (143). He's a well-rounded defenseman who matches up effectively against the league's best players.
3. Right wing Jarome Iginla (Calgary Flames): He will be 36 next summer, but he probably will be able to play anywhere he wants. His reputation is impeccable and he has netted 30 or more goals for 11 consecutive seasons. Plus, the hockey world loves his intangibles. He can still play physical, and he is a classy presence everywhere he goes.
4. Center Ryan Getzlaf (Anaheim): He's 6-4, 220, and he plays a physical game. He's more of a playmaker than a scorer, and his numbers were down last season (57 points in 82 games). But he could be a player who simply needs a change of venue.
5. Center Valtteri Filppula (Detroit Red Wings): This could be one of those cases where the romance of the player might be greater than the reality. With 66 points, Filppula had his best season in 2011-12. And there's a belief he could be even more productive if he shot more.
6. Left wing Brenden Morrow (Dallas Stars): He could easily become next summer's Shane Doan because he commands a similar respect around the NHL. Morrow is a classy, gritty leader with scoring potential, although his numbers were down last season (26 points in 56 games). But Morrow, who will be 34 next summer, is one season removed from scoring 33 goals and he has made a career out of backing his teammates and playing with heart.
7. Forward Patrik Elias (New Jersey Devils): The expectation is Elias will stay in New Jersey, where he has spent his entire career and GM Lou Lamoriello has a good record of keeping his players. But Elias is still playing at an exceptional level, and let's put him here in case there is a major disagreement about the length of his next contract.
8. Left wing Scott Hartnell (Philadelphia Flyers): He totaled 37 goals with 136 penalty minutes last season. Plus, he's a colorful, popular, quotable, memorable player. He's good for the team and the marketing department.
9. Left wing Nathan Horton (Boston Bruins): Obviously he faces heavy scrutiny this season because of his concussion issues. But if he stays healthy this season, there will be a long line of teams bidding for his services. He's a 230-pound winger who seems like a sure bet to score 20 to 25 goals with 50 to 60 points.
10. Left wing Ryane Clowe (San Jose Sharks): GMs are always looking for scoring left wings, and Clowe adds to his desirability by offering a tough, physical playing style. Last season, Clowe boasted 17 goals and 45 points, but he's truly a 55- to 60-point winger.
11. Left wing Alexandre Burrows (Vancouver): At 31, he's still in the prime of his career and he has produced 26 or more goals for four consecutive seasons. He plays a prickly, irritating style.
12. Center Stephen Weiss (Florida Panthers): He's 29, and he's been a consistent 50- to 60-point center for a long time. He could be a very attractive option for a team that needs help down the middle.
13. Left wing David Clarkson (New Jersey): Because Clarkson scored 30 goals last season and offers a physical presence, there is considerable intrigue about his potential. But he will need to have another impressive offensive season to stay on the list. It should be noted that Clarkson was valuable even before he was a 30-goal scorer.
14. Goalie Jimmy Howard (Detroit): His place on the list reflects that he is 27 and appears to be entering the best years of his career. Whether he can stay on the list depends on how well he plays this season and next summer's demand for goalies. Nicklas Backstrom and Kari Lehtonen are other candidates to be the hottest free agent goalie, depending on how they perform this season.
15. Pierre-Marc Bouchard (Minnesota Wild): Right now, there would be concern over his concussion history, but if he stays healthy this season, he will draw plenty of interest next summer. He's 28 and can be a 50- to 60-point guy.
