MEXICO CITY -- Canada won gold medals in the senior C-1 1,000-metre and junior C-2 1,000-metre women's canoeing events Thursday at the Pan American canoe and kayak championships.
Jenna Marks of Dartmouth, N.S., and Taylor Potts of Mississauga, Ont., teamed up to win the C-1 1,000 event to bring Canada's medal total to 12 for the day.
Earlier, Hannah MacIntosh and Mariah Godin, both of Dartmouth, N.S., took the junior C-2 1,000-metre title.
Canadian juniors collected second and third place finishes in three other 1,000-metre races.
In the men's K-2 kayak race, Alex Tessier of Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Keir Johnston of Mississauga, Ont., took the silver and Brian Malfesi of Maple Ridge, B.C., and Jarret Kenke of Saskatoon, won the bronze.
In the men's C-2 canoe, Chris Vincent and Joel Castonguay, both of Mississauga, Ont., were second and Maxim Poulin of Lac-Beauport, Que., and Jeremy Stott of Oakville, Ont., third.
In the women's K-2 kayak, Emilie Veronneau of Coteau-du-Lac, Que., and Alexa Irvin of Kentville, N.S., took silver and Alexandra Joy and Madeline Schmidt, both of Ottawa, were third.
Stott, Poulin, Castonguay and Jason McCoombs of Dartmouth, N.S., won silver in the men's C-4 1,000 canoe, while Joy, Schmidt, Sammy Hall of Waverley, N.S., and Andreanne Langlois of Lac-Beauport, Que., took silver in the women's K-4 kayak.
The men's K-4 team of Malfesi, Kenke, Simon Fense of Regina and Etienne Beauchesne of Trois-Rivieres, Que., won bronze.
Early rounds were also held in senior competition. Three-time Olympic medallist Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., won his heat to advance to the final in the K-1 1,000 as did Steve Jorens of Candiac, Que., and Angus Mortimer of Ottawa in the men's K-2 1,000.
This is a very important competition for the Canadian senior paddlers. It is a qualifying event for next year's Pan Am Games, also set for Mexico in October 2011. The Pan Am Games are an Olympic qualifying event.
