The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) filed paperwork to trademark "Toronto 2024 Olympic Bid," "Toronto 2024" and "TO2024" to prepare for a potential Olympic bid, according to the Toronto Sun.
The Sun reports that the COC filed the documents with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office at the end of July.
"The Canadian Olympic Committee has been crystal clear in its intention to lead, advocate and prepare for a possible 2024 Toronto Olympic bid," COC executive director of communications Carl Vallee told the Sun. "The trademark is simply part of that preparation in case it does go forward. That said, the mayor has also been clear that no decision has been made as of now."
Toronto mayor John Tory has been mulling a bid for the 2024 Games ever since the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. A spokesperson for Tory told the Sun the mayor's office wasn't aware the COC had filed the paperwork.
While some groups are in favour of Toronto putting in an Olympic bid, others have concerns over the type of financial impact it would have on the province and its citizens.
"This is not the right time for Toronto to be making a bid," Ontario's Canadian Taxpayers Federation director Christine Van Geyn told the Sun. "I like the Olympics, I like sports, I like things that make people happy but we're in a province that has an $8.5 billion deficit, we spend a billion dollars a month on interest, we have $314 billion in debt – this is not the right time to be doing yet another international sporting competition."
A municipal study estimated the bidding process alone would cost between $50-60 million and hosting the Olympics would cost somewhere in the range of $3.3 billion and $7 billion.
Prospective host cities for the 2024 Games have another two weeks to officially register their interest with the International Olympic Committee. Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Budapest and Baku, Azerbaijan have also expressed an interest in making a bid.
