Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty said Wednesday he does not know when he will be able to play after injuring his left knee in early July.
"I wish I could predict when I'll return, but I think that would mess with my head a little too much," Pacioretty told the Montreal Gazette. "I just want to make sure that while I'm injured I'm still part of the team."
The Canadiens said the day after Pacioretty was injured July 9 his recovery would take 12 weeks, a time frame that would end a few days before Montreal opens the 2015-16 NHL season Oct. 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Pacioretty said he is confident his knee will heal completely.
"It looks bad, but it could have been so much worse," he said. "It's something that will heal. Everyone heals at a different speed, but I'm confident it will heal 100 percent and won't affect my future."
The 26-year-old skated for 20 minutes Tuesday at the Canadiens practice facility in Brossard, Quebec, his first time on the ice since the injury, and again Wednesday.
Pacioretty sustained fractures in the tibial plateau just below his left knee, the newspaper reported, during a workout in Boca Raton, Fla. He did not sustain any ligament damage in the knee.
Pacioretty said he was pulling a chute in sprints when he was injured.
"Totally routine stuff and, of course, it happened on the last sprint I was supposed to do," he said. "I'll never have the answer for whether it was from my (2013-14) hamstring or from the hot weather; maybe I was a little dehydrated. … I was in a lot of pain, thinking the worst. But, you know, all things considered, it could have been a lot worse than it was. It meant no surgery and it's healed well up to this point, which means it's healed straight without the need for surgery."
Pacioretty has scored 76 goals the past two seasons, tied for third in the NHL.
