MONTREAL - Andy Murray made a successful return to the court while Vasek Pospisil kept Canada on a roll Wednesday at the US$3.49-million men's Rogers Cup.
Murray, in his first action since his stirring victory at Wimbledon in June, shook off some rust to down Marcel Granollers 6-4, 7-6 (2) on centre court.
Pospisil posted a 6-2, 6-4 second-round victory over Czech Radek Stepanek.
Murray, a two-time Rogers Cup champion, won his 13th straight match, including his victories at London and Wimbledon, where be became the first men's champion from Britain in 77 years.
On Thursday, Murray will face Ernests Gulbis, who beat Fabio Fognini 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Pospisil, 23, reached the third round of a Masters series tournament for the first time by beating the 51st-ranked Stepanek in their first career meeting.
The 71st-ranked Pospisil will next face the winner of a match later Wednesday between fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych and Alexander Dolgopolov.
The Vancouver resident looked to be cruising when he took a 5-2 second-set lead with his fifth service break of the match but then lost on his own serve.
He made no mistakes on his next service game, taking all four points.
Pospisil, coming off a victory in a Challenger series event in Vancouver, scored his first win over a top-20 opponent Tuesday when he ousted American John Isner in three sets.
Pospisil was among a record five Canadians to reach the second round.
Later on Wednesday, Ottawa's Jesse Levine faces two-time champion Rafael Nadal, Filip Peliwo of North Vancouver, B.C., plays Denis Istomin, Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., takes on 15th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz and 13th-seeded Milos Raonic goes up against Mikhail Youzhny.
