The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that the club has signed defenseman Paul Ranger to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN's Darren Dreger reported via Twitter that the deal is worth roughly $1 million.

Ranger, 28, played in 51 games with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies last season. He had eight goals, 17 assists, a plus-16 rating and 54 penalty minutes.

Ranger played in 270 regular-season games for the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2005-09. He had 18 goals, 74 assists and 218 penalty minutes. The 6-3, 210-pound defenseman's best offensive season came in 2007-08, when he collected 31 points (10 goals, 21 assists) in 72 games. In 11 career playoff games with the Lightning, he had two goals, five assists and four penalty minutes.

Ranger was selected by the Lightning in the seventh round (No. 183) of the 2002 NHL Draft.

The Maple Leafs also announced that Chris Dennis has been promoted to assistant coach on Randy Carlyle's staff, where he will continue to work with Greg Cronin, Dave Farrish, Scott Gordon and Rick St. Croix.

Dennis will be entering his ninth full season with the Leafs. He has served the team as the coaching staff's video analyst (2005-06 to 2009-10), video coach (2010-11), and assistant coach, video (2011-12 to 2012-2013).
