MEDELLIN, Colombia -- Canadian cyclist Clara Hughes won gold Friday in the time-trial road race at the 2011 UCI Pan-American Championships.
Hughes, fresh off a general classification win at the 2011 Tour of the Gila stage race, completed the 24.2-kilometre course in 25 minutes 59.203 seconds.
Evelyn Stevens of the United States was second in 26:27.019, while Amber Neben, also of the U.S., was third in 26:42.956.
"I am grateful the national team believed in me enough to give me a spot on the team here, and I wanted to give Canada a good result," said Hughes, the bronze medallist in the time trial and road races at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
"I was up against two of the best racers in the world and to come out on top is extremely satisfying and a good indication of my potential in the time trial."
Hughes, a Winnipeg native and resident of Glen Sutton, Que., has won four speedskating medals for Canada -- including one gold -- over three Winter Olympics. Canadian coach Vincent Jourdain likes what he has seen from Hughes in her return to competitive cycling.
"It's a step in which Clara succeeded brilliantly for her return to competitive road cycling. She had a flawless race, and the fact that she beat the Americans Nuben and Stevens is a good indication of where she currently sits," Jourdain said. "Working with an athlete like Clara, as talented, determined and professional, is truly a privilege."
Denise Ramsden of Yellowknife finished fifth with a time of 27:50.497.
In the men's 40-kilometre time trial, Argentina's Leandro Messineo won in a time of 48:51, followed by Columbia's Ivan Mauricio Casas (48:54.626) and Venezuela's Tomas Gil (49:50). Victoria's Rob Britton was fifth in 49:58 and Hugo Houle of Sainte-Perpetue, Que., was 22nd in 53:14.
