It appears Agustin Barrenechea wants to go from the blockee to the blocker.
According to the Hamilton Spectator, the veteran linebacker is spending his time at Tiger-Cats' mini-camp learning to become a fullback.
"I'm trying to bring that mentality, that aggression, to the fullback position," Barrenechea told teh Spectator. "On defence, you read and react, while on offence you dictate and deliver the blow."
The fullback position has been a point of weakness for the Tiger-Cats in recent years, using defensive linemen Garrett McIntyre and Justin Hickman as blocking backs at times last season.
Tiger-Cats head coach Marcel Bellefeuille has been happy with Barrenechea and his ability to adapt to a new position.
"Normally, in a short camp, you're going to put guys where they have the best opportunity to have success right away," Bellefeuille said. "But that's what these workouts are for, to do these types of things."
Darcy Brown is the starter at fullback but he played slotback in college and is still learning the position but Barrenechea is willing to work with the third-year man to help the team.
"Darcy is a great young player who has a great future in football," Barrenechea told the Spectator. "If he can take some of the things that I've done on defence, like being aggressive, and implement them into his game, I think that will help him, too."
While some veteran players don't like change, the 31-year-old Barrenechea sees this as a challenge.
"I definitely have to do my homework," Barrenechea told the newspaper. "But I love football and I've been a student of the game my whole life. This is an exciting opportunity to learn something new."
