Canadian Denis Shapovalov was eliminated from the Australian Open after losing to Marin Cilic in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 early on Thursday morning.
The 23rd ranked Shapovalov was unable to build on a solid opening-round performance against Yunchaokete Bu as he committed 42 unforced errors to just 12 winners in the loss.
Shapovalov was unable to get much going on his own serve, winning just 51 per cent of his total service points and just 33 per cent of his second-serve points.
Cilic, the world No. 70 and 2014 US Open winner, was in control of the match from the beginning, commiting just 24 unforced errors while hitting 20 winners in the victory. The veteran won 86 per cent of his service games and faced break point just six times in the match that last just over two hours.
With 599 career tour-level victories, Cilic is now tied with Goran Ivanisevic for the most wins by a Croatian man in the Open Era.
The Richmond Hill, Ont., native has now failed to advance past the second round at the Austrlian Open in each of the past three years.
Reigning National Bank Open winner Victoria Mboko is now the last Canadian standing in singles action at Melbourne Park. The 19-year-old will face 14th seed Clara Tauson in her third round match on Thursday evening.
The 37-year-old Cilic will move on to the third round to face No. 12 Casper Ruud where he aims to become the second active player to reach 600 wins, joining Novak Djokovic.
