The Canadian Football League is increasing its salary cap to $6.28 million for the 2026 season, it was announced Friday.
The new cap represents an increase of nearly $220,000 from the $6.06 million it was set at in 2025. The CFL is also providing an additional $50,000 per club toward pre-season compensation for veteran players.
The league said it was able to raise the cap due to an increase in defined league revenue, which grew by $10 million last season.
"The energy around our sport has never been stronger," said CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston in a news release. "We're seeing meaningful growth in fan engagement and revenue, and we're channelling that momentum back into the league. As our business expands, the players who make our game outstanding are sharing in the upside, reinforcing a model built for long-term success."
"Our revenue-sharing model demonstrates what's possible when players and the League work collectively," said CFLPA president Solomon Elimimian in the same release. "This isn't just a number; it's an investment in our players' careers, their families, and the long-term health of the game. As the talent that drives fan interest, it's essential that player well-being continues to grow alongside the League's growth."
The 2026 CFL season will kick off on June 4 with a matchup between the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
