The Vancouver Canucks will be without two of their top players for the next week, at least.
Brock Boeser and Zeev Buium were both placed on injured reserve Monday after suffering injuries over the weekend.
Boeser was elbowed in the head by the Penguins' Bryan Rust in the dying seconds of Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh. Rust will have a hearing Tuesday with the NHL as a result of the hit.
Boeser has struggled offensively this season — his first on a new seven-year, $50.75-million contract — with just 12 goals and 30 points in 50 games.
Buium was injured in the same Penguins game when he took a puck to the face in the first period. He did return with a bubble cage, but now heads to injured reserve to fully recover.
Buium, 20, was one of the key pieces the Canucks acquired from the Wild in the Quinn Hughes trade. The rookie blue-liner has five goals and 20 points in 51 games this season, including six points in 20 games with the Canucks.
In corresponding moves, the Canucks recalled forward Jonathan Lekkerimaki and defenceman Victor Mancini from AHL Abbotsford.
The Canucks return to the ice Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks.
