Vancouver Canucks defenceman Zeev Buium could miss two weeks with a facial facture, head coach Adam Foote told reporters on Tuesday.
Buium, 20, sustained the injury during the team's 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday after taking a puck to the face.
Foote says that Buium could opt for surgery but is expected to return after the NHL goes on break for The Winter Olympic Games.
The 6-foot, left-shot defenceman was acquired by the Canucks, along with forwards Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, and a draft pick, in a blockbuster trade with the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 12 that saw star defenceman Quinn Hughes go the other way.
He is a part of the walking wounded in Vancouver that also has defenceman Derek Forbort, goaltender Thatcher Demko, and forwards Brock Boeser and Rossi on injured reserve.
Buium has five goals and 20 points in 51 games this season, including two goals and six points in 20 games with the Canucks.
Additionally, Boeser is in concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head during the team's loss to the Penguins, but is feeling better according to Foote.
The incident occurred in the dying seconds of the third period when Penguins forward Bryan Rust clipped Boeser in the head with his elbow while Boeser was going for a loose puck in front of the Penguins' net.
Rust received a two-minute penalty for an illegal check to the head with no time left on the clock and handed a three-game suspension on Tuesday.
Boeser signed a seven-year, $50.75 extension to stay in Vancouver in the off-season.
The 6-foot-1 winger has 12 goals and 25 points in 50 games this season.
