New Vancouver Canucks head coach Adam Foote says he's spoken to captain Quinn Hughes about the speculation surrounding his future status with the team and said, "we'll just let everything take care of itself" as they focus on the upcoming season.

"Quinn and I spent a good couple of hours alone," Foote told Ray Ferraro and Darren Dreger on the Ray and Dregs podcast on Thursday. "It was a real good talk about where he may be now or later.

"And for me, I honestly think he's going to be a Canuck. I think it's all blown up, I'm not sure how much he wants to play with his brothers or not. And I'm not going to get too deep into it. I said to him [that] I'm the type of person, I think he understands me. Of course I want him here, I'm just going to coach each day at a time.

"I see him here now, I see him here for these two years, I see him here in the future. And if we do what we can do, and he buys into the process and he's having fun - we're winning some hockey games - we'll just let everything take care of itself."

Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford raised eyebrows this past spring when he said Hughes had expressed an interest in playing with brother Jack in the NHL at some point.

The brothers were then asked about the comments at the NHL's annual player media tour in Las Vegas earlier this month.

"I'd love to play with Quinn at some point," the New Jersey Devils forward said. "I'm not afraid to say it. Yeah, eventually I'd love to play with him. And whether that's in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point I want to play with Quinn."

"Jack wasn't the first one to bring it up, in fairness to him," added Quinn at the tour. "Especially with how much noise there was last year, people want to know what direction the team's going in. Is there a direction and whatnot, etc., etc.? So, I can understand why it's being brought up."

For Foote, the speculation surrounding the players extends well beyond what Rutherford and the Hughes brothers have said.

"There's a lot of noise - unnecessary noise – but I guess it's projected as well from people [saying], 'Why wouldn't they do it?'" he told the Ray and Dregs podcast. "Even at camp, where he comes from the summer to now as a captain, with the world of social media - they have to do those things - go to Vegas and be involved with more media.

"He's still learning as a captain what it takes to be a captain. You've got to be there for your teammates, you got to answer those tough questions, you've got to face the media, you've got to sell the game. Now camp's now been a few days – over a week – and he's starting to feel comfortable, getting his legs, and he's liking what we're doing on the ice. He's having fun."

Hughes has two years left on a six-year, $47.1 million contract he signed in October of 2021.
