{allcanada} Senators won't rush Craig Anderson's return

OTTAWA -- It's up to No. 1 goaltender Craig Anderson when he will play, Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher said Friday.

That could be as early as Saturday when the Senators play the New York Islanders at Canadian Tire Centre (1 p.m. ET; TSN5, RDS, MSG+, NHL.TV).

"Would he be able to be in the net physically? A hundred percent," Boucher said. "Right now it's up to him to tell us if mentally he's ready to go. It's a lot more about feeling prepared and making sure he's seen enough situations to feel 'I can go in a game now.' I can't answer that right now."

Anderson' last start came Dec. 5 in an 8-5 road loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He gave up seven goals on 43 shots while playing 52:36. Anderson took personal leave after that game to help his wife Nicholle deal with treatments for throat cancer.

Anderson ended his personal leave Jan. 30. The Senators have been limited to two full practices in the past week, but Anderson missed practice Monday to help his family settle back into their Ottawa home. Anderson had his own net at practice Friday; Mike Condon and Andrew Hammond shared the other.

"He's looking good in practice, but I've got to go back and really figure out where he is, his mind, his body," Boucher said. [Goaltending coach] Pierre (Groulx) said every practice he's gotten better. Now he's gotten better, but it's really where is it at? Are we getting closer? Oh, yeah. Is it tomorrow? Maybe he's backing up. Maybe it's the next day. We'll see. I'll go see now exactly where we're at."

If Anderson decides he is not ready to play to play against the Islanders, Boucher said Condon will start.
