SENATORS (14-8-5) at PANTHERS (13-10-4)
TV: FS-F, RDS, TSN5
Season series: Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr scored twice in his only game against the Ottawa Senators in a 4-2 win in Ottawa on March 29 that gave Florida a split of the four-game season series. Senators goalie Craig Anderson made 43 saves in a 3-2 road loss at BBT&T Center on Nov. 28, 2014, six weeks after he had a 30-save shutout in Ottawa's 1-0 win at BB&T Center on Oct. 14. Senators center Kyle Turris had a goal and four assists, and defenseman Erik Karlsson had two goals and an assist. Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau had three assists, and forwards Aleksander Barkov and Dave Bolland each had a goal and an assist.
Senators team scope: Ottawa did not practice Monday and assistant coach Jason Smith felt a day off in South Florida was a good opportunity for the players to get re-energized after a 4-1 loss at the New York Rangers left Ottawa with a 1-4-0 record in the second of back-to-back games. "Obviously throughout the year, you go through stretches where you play a lot of games and maybe you don't practice enough, but it's a good day for the guys to take a step back, kind of recharge the battery and just have some time away from the rink," Smith told the Senators website. Ottawa coach Dave Cameron has a 46-23-13 record during the regular season since he replaced Paul MacLean as coach a year ago Tuesday. "You aspire to get to the top, but I never, ever, had a timeline on it," Cameron told the Ottawa Citizen. "I was realistic enough to know there are only 30 [head coaches] and that I may never get it. There are a lot of good coaches that never get to be head coaches in the NHL."
Panthers team scope: Florida opens a two-game homestand Tuesday that concludes against the Washington Capitals on Thursday before a four-game road trip that will complete a run of eight straight games against Eastern Conference opponents. The Panthers returned home from a 4-1-0 road trip following a 4-2 loss at the New Jersey Devils on Sunday, which ended the Panthers' season-high five game winning streak. "Unfortunately you're only as good as your last game so we're not real happy right now," goalie Roberto Luongo told the Miami Herald on Sunday. "All in all, we did a good job and now need to get home and get back up on the saddle. We have a few big games coming up." The Panthers have are 7-3-1 in their past 11 games. Luongo played his 886th NHL game Sunday to tie Hall of Famer Tony Esposito for seventh on the all-time list among goalies.
