Diana Matheson will be named to the Canadian Women's National team Monday when head coach John Herdman unveils his 23-player roster for this summer's FIFA Women's World Cup at 2pm et/11am pt (TSN1, TSN3, TSN 4, TSN5). Whether Matheson will be fit to participate in the competition is a bigger question.
A recent foot injury has thrown Matheson's World Cup involvement severely in doubt. Sources say the 31-year old broke her foot last month rehabilitating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Matheson has been wearing a cast and it won't be determined until the coming weeks how the foot has healed. The latest setback is a cruel blow to Canada's best midfield player. Matheson tore her ACL last October in a friendly against Japan. Her participation this summer was always going to be touch and go, entirely dependent on the success of her recovery. It was said the midfielder was progressing well in her rehab and even suggested she was ahead of schedule. The broken foot now appears to be the biggest road block in her return to fitness.
The team and player have not publicly commented on the severity of the injury or expected timeline for recovery. Broken bones in the foot are often times a nightmare for soccer players due to the complexity of the injury and demanding nature of the sport. More is expected to be said later this afternoon.
It is no surprise Canada has been hush-hush on Matheson's status. She is an all-important player to Herdman's designs and his team's World Cup hopes. Matheson has been capped 166 times, scoring 15 goals for country. Her most memorable goal was the winner in a 1-0 victory over France to capture the bronze medal at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games. The 5-foot-1 midfielder has exceptional work rate as a heart and soul player in the middle of the park, bringing leadership and presence not easily replaced in the team.
A pool of six alternate players will be available to Herdman if Matheson is unable to recover in time for the tournament. Naming Matheson to the 23-player squad Monday is a no-brainer for Herdman, having fall-back options in case bad news is inevitably delivered. Matheson is running out of time with Canada kicking off the World Cup in just 41 days. Canada's opens the tournament taking on China, June 6, in Edmonton. The FIFA Women's World Cup runs from June 6 through July 5 in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton (CTV, TSN, RDS, TSN Radio).
