SYDNEY, Australia – Bethanie Mattek-Sands upset Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-3 on Monday in the Apia International Sydney tennis tournament.
Bouchard, from Montreal, is ranked No. 31 in the WTA's singles rankings, while Mattek-Sands is No. 48.
Although Bouchard had two aces, she also had five double faults. Mattek-Sands was dominant, claiming victory in 1:18, winning 65 points to Bouchard's 52.
The Apia International Sydney tournament is a warmup event to the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 13.
