I am sorry but this thread made me laugh so hard that i started choking. Gart was one of the early upmixing pioneers and not a bad one either, when you consider when it was made and the tools available at the time, it was outstanding! The tools available nowadays are far more advanced than what gart, area51, and toup were armed with and many of them floating around are excellent and well worth the time, But i guess you can wait another 30 years or so and maybe if you're really, really lucky, a record company might just remix your favorite album into surround for you? (but i would'nt hold my breath) .
To paraphrase the immortal words of Sly Stone at Woodstock the REAL waste of time here is; " Waiting for others approval to get in on something that might just do you some good". That very good pink floyd "animals" upmix mentioned above was most likely the one that was done by my good friend floydflush and it is indeed excellent, and still part of my regular listening rotation. Those of you who are not even willing to give these new breed of upmixes an honest listen are only denying yourselves an excellent opportunity. But then again denial is a very strong emotion so maybe it's just best to remember the omnipresent words of Mama in "The Waterboy" and keep on telling yourself that upmixing "is the Devil".
