When Shawn Horcoff blocked a shot on Monday night, it continued a tough run for some of the NHL's captains.
He had to leave the game and became the fourth captain to miss time this season with injury.
"He broke his knuckle," Edmonton Oilers coach Ralph Krueger told news reporters after the game. "It got pushed right in. So that will be long-term."
Some other captains with bad luck:
-Ed Jovanovski, Florida Panthers: Named to the post in January, he suffered a knee injury on Jan. 29. He's not with the team on its current road trip.
-Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado Avalanche: The NHL's youngest captain was crushed by San Jose Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart on Jan. 26 and remains out with a head injury.
-Ryan Callahan, New York Rangers: He suffered a subluxation of his shoulder on Jan. 29 during a fight with the Philadelphia Flyers' Max Talbot. He took part in practice on Monday while wearing a non-contact jersey.
-Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay Lightning: He has a bone bruise after a teammate's shot hit ricocheted and hit him on the foot in the closing seconds of Saturday's game, but it looks like he'll play Tuesday night and not miss any games.
-Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames: Entering Tuesday's game, he had no goals in his first six games. That hasn't happened since 1999-2000. This is his contract year.
-Shea Weber, Nashville Predators: He signed a $110 million offer sheet during the offseason, which the Predators matched. Entering Tuesday, he had points, despite playing 27:32 a game. Weber is adjusting to a defensive partner after Ryan Suter left for the Minnesota Wild.
-Brenden Morrow, Dallas Stars: He didn't score his first goal of the season until Monday night in his 10th game of the season.
-Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals: There are plenty of reasons for the Capitals' 2-6-1 start, such as lack of time to adjust to coach Adam Oates' new system and porous goaltending. But Ovechkin has two goals in nine games, a pace of 18 goals for a full season.
-Dion Phaneuf, Toronto Maple Leafs: He has one assist in nine games and a team-worst minus-6 rating. Most of that is the result of two bad games.
-Dustin Brown, Los Angeles Kings: He's also a team-worst minus 6.
-David Backes, St. Louis Blues: This was bad officiating rather than bad luck, but he was ejected for a perfectly legal shoulder-to-chest that was misinterpreted as a head to the hit. The Detroit Red Wings scored the winning goal on the ensuing five-minute power play. The NHL later rescinded his match penalty. Backes does have only one goal in his first eight games, but he usually starts the season slowly.
But some captains are thriving his season. San Jose's Joe Thornton, Buffalo's Jason Pominville, Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby and Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg ranked fifth, six, seventh and ninth in NHL scoring and Lecavalier has 11 points in eight games. Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzalf, in his contract year, is averaging a point a game.
