Alex Kuvaev made sure his return to the Western Hockey League had an impact.

Kuvaev scored the shoot-out winner and added a regulation time goal as the Vancouver Giants beat the Kamloops Blazers 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The Russian import was playing his first WHL game since being let go by the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the end of last season.

Jordan Martinook and Nathan Burns also scored for Vancouver (23-12-2).

Austin Madaisky and Brendan Ranford each had a goal and an assist for Kamloops (24-9-3), while Dylan Illick added a single goal.

Adam Morrison made 35 saves for the win, while at the other end of the ice Cole Cheveldave stopped 32 shots in defeat.

The Giants went 0 for 1 on the power play while the Blazers scored once on four opportunities with the man advantage.

Kuvaev scored 11 goals and 24 points in 58 games last year with the Hurricanes before being released at the end of the year. He spent the beginning of this season with a junior club in Russia before deciding to return to Canada with the Giants.

At Vancouver, Martinook opened the scoring 4:55 into the first period to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.

The game stayed that way until 6:34 of the second period when Kuvaev doubled Vancouver's lead to 2-0, however Ranford scored at 13:47 to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Madaisky scored a power-play goal just 11 seconds into the third period to tie it at two, but Burns scored a little over two minutes later to regain the lead for the Giants.

At 17:41 Willick scored for the Blazers, tying the game at three and forcing overtime.

After no one could score in extra time, Kuvaev scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give Vancouver a 4-3 victory over Kamloops.
