HAMILTON, Ont. -- Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Ray Mariuz is leaving the game after eight seasons in the Canadian Football League.
The Mississauga, Ont., native began his career in Toronto after being selected by the Argonauts in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. He played three years with Toronto, capturing a Grey Cup with the Argos in 2004, before signing with the Ticats in 2006 where he spent the final five seasons of his career.
"Walking away from the game that I love was a difficult decision, but I believe it to be the right one for my family and I," Mariuz said in a statement. "I would like to thank my teammates, both past and present, the entire Tiger-Cats organization, and all of the fans of our league for making my eight years so enjoyable.
"Hamilton fans especially have been amazing, and will be one of the things that I will miss the most about the game."
Mariuz finishes his career with 157 defensive tackles, 157 special teams tackles, six quarterback sacks and 11 tackles for a loss.
He was nominated as the Ticats Most Outstanding Canadian in 2008. His 76 special teams tackles as a Ticat are the sixth-highest total in team history.
"You can always find players to play this great game, but you don't often find people like Ray Mariuz," Ticats president Scott Mitchell said. "He's done everything for this organization both on and off the field and exemplifies what we would like our organization to be about -- smart, tough, durable, talented and dedicated."
Mariuz played four seasons at McMaster University before turning pro.
