The top-ranked Saint John Sea Dogs swept their way into the second round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs Wednesday with a 4-0 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on a night where five teams were eliminated from the post-season.

Stanislav Galiev, Jonathan Huberdeau and Nathan Beaulieu had a goal and an assist each as the Sea Dogs completed the four-game sweep on the road. Zack Phillips added three assists and Michael Kirkpatrick also scored to round out the scoring.

Mathieu Corbeil earned the win in his first start of the playoffs while Andrew Hayes suffered the loss for Cape Breton.

The Sea Dogs will open the QMJHL quarter-finals at home, with Games 1 scheduled for April 8.

The second-ranked Montreal Juniors, third-ranked Quebec Remparts and fourth-ranked Drummondville Voltigeurs also completed first-round sweeps. Montreal beat Halifax 4-2, Quebec downed Val-d'Or 5-2 and Drummondville edged Chicoutimi 5-4 to advance to the next round.

In the only upset so far in the first round, 11th-ranked Victoriaville completed a sweep of sixth-ranked Acadie-Bathurst with a 4-3 overtime win. The Tigres were the only home team to win on Wednesday's eight-game schedule.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL it was: Shawinigan 4 P.E.I. 2; Lewiston 4 Moncton 3 (OT); and Gatineau 4 Rimouski 3 (OT).

At Sydney, N.S., after a scoreless 20 minutes the Sea Dogs began to open things up in the second period, outshooting the Eagles 19-6.

Galiev opened the scoring at the five-minute mark of the second, backhanding a rebound past Hayes after the goalie was handcuffed by a Phillips shot. It was the fifth goal of the playoffs for Galiev, who has scored in all four post-season games.

Huberdeau scored the first short-handed at 9:44 of the second. Eric Gelinas attempted to send a high clearance around the glass in the defensive end only to have the puck take a wild bounce out front. Phillips collected the puck and sent Huberdeau on a breakaway, and he beat Hayes for his fifth goal of the playoffs.

Kirkpatrick scored another short-handed goal at 6:07 of the third period. The North Sydney, N.S., native chased down a puck at top speed, picked it up near the offensive blue-line, deked to his forehand and slipped it between the legs of Hayes.
