Team Canada's world junior hockey team will be without Jaden Schwartz for the remainder of the tournament after he suffered a fractured ankle.
The injury happened when Schwartz fell awkwardly into the boards during the first period of Canada's second game of the tournament, a 7-2 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday in Buffalo, N.Y.
The 18-year-old Wilcox, Sask., native played a few shifts after the fall, and scored a goal but did not suit up for Canada's game against Norway on Wednesday.
"It was a dream come true to make this team and to not be able to play in it is tough," Schwartz said. "There's a lot of emotions."
He will remain with the national squad through the rest of the tournament, but not in the same capacity Schwartz had hoped — with a cast on his injured foot.
"It's unfortunate timing but sitting here feeling sorry for myself won't do any good," he said. "I'll be here to support the guys. There's people in the world going through worse things than I am so I'll keep that in the back of my mind."
Schwartz is expected to miss six weeks of action.
The 5-10, 182-pound forward is in his rookie season at Colorado College where he has put up 11 goals and 15 assists in 17 games. He was a first-round draft pick (14th overall) in NHL entry draft by the St. Louis Blues.
Canada's final preliminary-round game is on Friday, against Sweden.
