Just over one year after being left in critical condition following a hit from behind, defenceman Ben Fanelli is returning to full practice drills with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers.

Fanelli, now 17, suffered skull and facial fractures on Oct. 30, 2009 when Erie Otters forward Michael Liambis hit him from the blind side behind the net.

The OHL suspended Liambis for the entire season and playoffs following the hit, which served to end the OHL career of Liambis. The over-age player already playing his final season of junior hockey.

Fanelli has been skating with the Rangers since September, but this is the first time he has been cleared to participate in any contract drills.

"This is a positive step for Ben and we are pleased that he continues to make progress, however it is important to note that there is no timeline for Ben to return to game play," explained Kitchener general manager and head coach Steve Spott. "Our team looks forward to having him on the ice with us on a daily basis."

"For both our organization and Ben's family, the focus has been on Ben's recovery and will remain unchanged as Ben makes another positive step forward," said Rangers chief operating officer Steve Bienkowski.
